About Us

The Revenue Bar Association was founded on 20.2.1963.   The founding members of RBA included  Shri.K.Parasaran, (Former Attorney General of India), Shri.M.M.Ismail (later Judge of Madras High Court), Shri. T.V.Viswanatha Iyer,  Shri.K.Srinivasan, Shri.S.Swaminathan, and Shri.S.Padmanabhan,   Sr. Advocates amongst other legal luminaries.  The RBA was created with the objects of encouraging study of laws relating to revenue, economics and planning.   Over the last five decades, the Association had been the fulcrum for tax Advocates in Chennai and was nurtured by Seniors like Shri.K.R.Ramamani, Shri.V.Ramachandran, and Shri K J Chandran, Shri Arvind P Datar who have held the position of Presidents of RBA and brought glory to this Body.

In the early 1970s, when the Income-tax Appellate Tribunal was situated in the premises of the Income-tax department at Nungambakkam High Road, senior Advocates such as K.Srinivasan and S.Swaminathan made a representation to the President of Tribunal for a room within the ITAT premises.  Their request was accepted by allotting a room and that place was transformed into a library by the RBA.   The room served as a library and a meeting place for the best tax brains in Chennai and to share their thoughts on the subject.

When the ITAT was shifted to Rajaji Bhavan in August 1998, the then Vice-President, in continuation with the grandest tradition of providing  a place for the Association to carry on with the service to the tax professionals, allotted  a similar facility to the RBA, from where it still functions.  The facilities in the library such as books, journals and  computers have been used and enjoyed by all representatives  before the Tribunal.  The Association also maintains a smaller library in 32 Law Chambers, High Court, Madras for use of advocates practising in indirect taxes. In the 1980s, the activities of the Association had declined, and a great effort was put in to revive the association in 1991, by a committee headed by late K R Ramamani, senior advocate, and ably assisted by K. J. Chandran, Philip George, and late V Balachandar, and other members.

Revenue Bar Association carries the credit of hosting a study circle meeting every month uninterruptedly over the past many years. The Association also hosts annual tax seminars.   RBA celebrated its Golden Jubilee for whole year from March 2012 to February 2013 with a monthly seminar dedicated to a past doyens of the tax bar.  The role of the Association in conducting such regular academic activity came in for full praise from a host of sitting and retired Judges of the High Court and the professional fraternity.
